    Welcome to the Club!

1.Steering will be heavier that a modern car, most noticeable at low speed. Easiest way to check for stiffness is to jack the front end off the ground an check lock to lock for any binding. This could be caused by steering box, idler or even kingpins.Oil not grease in box and idler. It takes a bit of getting used to, dont try turning the steering wheel until you are actually moving and it wont feel as bad!

    2. You cannot use tubeless tyres on standard Somerset rims.

3.I think Longbridge Spares were investigating having some made. I just purchased a complete secondhand air cleaner with good rubber connector from Graham Potts (Potts Parts).

    Happy motoring!

I use old rubber conveyor belting for such things. Lasts forever and canvas reinforced. Cuts with hacksaw/bandsaw.

Sounds as though clutch is on its way out. My Somerset used to do exactly the same thing. You had to set off in Second to avoid it. Turned out the plate was down to the rivets.

As I said in your previous post, the block of the Somerset engine, although B series, is not the same as the MGB block, so camshaft will not fit. It is possible to fit a complete 1622 or 1800 engine to a Somerset with some modifications, but it is not a 5 minute job. I think there is an article on here as to what is involved.

A standard Somerset engine, in good order, should give adequate performance for the vehicle in most circumstances.

Sorry, meant 1200cc A40 (Cambridge) is different block to Somerset

I doubt whether anything will fit. Mini uses “A” series engine, whereas Somerset is totally different “B” series engine. The B series went on to power Farina models MGB etc, up to 1800CC but block was lengthened to achiecve this. Even the A50, whilst still 1200cc is a different block to the Somerset, Stick with original parts!

You need a non ballast coil with the “acorn” screw rather t6han the push fit. Lucas DLB100. Try and get one from a reutable dealer. The aftermarket pattern ones are complete junk.

There is a guy on Ebay that sells (very good) kits for a number of vehicles. (search for Somerset headlining). I am sure he would make you one if you could provide him with the old one as a pattern. My Somerset one fitted perfectly.

Hi. Very few people seem to visit this forum, which I think is a shame. Farcebook doesnt cut it for me!

To answer your question, the grills are held on by oblong “grab washers”. They also now make “starlock”round ones. I could only find metric so I had to run a rat tailed file through them to open them out a bit.

Loads on ebay. These for example

Well, that sounds as if the pump is operating correctly. The only other thing I can think of is the needle valve in the carb might be sticking , but then it wouldnt fill the float chamber when you hand primed ?? Maybe float sticking??

Sounds as though the “foot” of the fuel pump is not correctly conntacting the cam on the engine. Try removing the pump and reseating it. You should be able to feel the foot touching something as you put the pump back on.

E10 is absolute junk. Killer for garden equipment and older cars. Run E5. If you can get the Esso “super”, it actually contains NO ethanol is certain parts of the country (look it up). Better than any additive and you actually get MORE mpg!

I got those from Australia. Not cheap and you have to actually have to carve them a bit yourself. You just need to be carefull and  take your time and you can achieve a good result.

They seem to have gone up a bit since I got mine, but I never found another source!!

Early Somersets just has quarter round seals glued into position. Later ones had a channel spot welded round the doors for the “foot” of a seal to slide in to. I used the quarter round stuff that is available for Morris Minor Traveller rear doors available from various MM specialists. For example https://www.sealsdirect.co.uk/shop/srs1913-21466?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2-_Uv_XkhgMV_5RQBh2RIQ5SEAQYAyABEgIP6vD_BwE

As for the channel fitting type then COH Baines who have an online profile list.

My doors actually had the metal channels but they were very rusty and non existant in some parts (a real rust trap), so I removed they all with a sharp cold chisel and reverted to the quarter round type after rustproofing the door.
