I have recently become aware that my A40 has started pinking under load.

It has been running electronic ignition for the last 10,000 miles. Ignition timing has not changed. I suspect it’s the E10 fuel. Has anyone else experienced this? Have you tried a fuel additive ? Did it work? Any other thoughts thanks Mike

I really wouldn’t consider using E10 fuel in our old cars. It can be damaging to your carburettor and other parts. E5 is a better fuel – higher octane (and more expensive!) but it is effectively the ‘old’ unleaded, with lower amounts of Ethanol.

E10 is absolute junk. Killer for garden equipment and older cars. Run E5. If you can get the Esso “super”, it actually contains NO ethanol is certain parts of the country (look it up). Better than any additive and you actually get MORE mpg!

Ok thanks for the replies. I Shall start shopping at Shell or Esso for E5 and stop buying E10 from the supermarket!

    So, reporting back.

Friday evening I filled up with a tankfull Shells finest. V power! The difference was quite noticeable. My truck immediately ran much smoother and seems generally much nicer to drive. Saturday was a running day at the miniature railway society that I belong to. I had 4 bags of coal in the back and towed a trailer with a heavy locomotive.  I could hear no pinking even with this heavy load . So that’s a good result. Thanks for the advice.
