Hello, Please can someone help me with this?
I am looking at a 1952 Hereford for sale, the car still shows it’s original number plates. Speaking with the seller, they say the (then) DVLC deadline for retaining original number plates back in the 1980s was missed and an ‘SV’ replacement number and V5 was issued. The car has not been on the road since before 1983.
The seller cannot find any old MOTs, log books, ‘receipts, etc……can anyone think of any way possible of getting the original plate put back on the car? The plate is not showing as live on the DVLA database. Any help greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Some area records have survived. Some even kept records of vthe old log books. but whether this will be enough for the DVLA is questionable. You used to be able to obtain stuff from DVLA via V666 form, but they now hide behind “data protection” and will not give previous owner details, unless you run a car clamping business!! Contact the club registrations officer. If you do decide to buy it, I would just apply for a new log book on the old reg number (Dont mention the “SV” number) and see what happens. Thoroughly search the vehicle for an old tax disk or something!
Best of luck

Simply applying for a new V5c on the old number wont work either because the chassis number is already linked to a reg number. Im afraid DVLA have now closed any loopholes and everything has to go down the right route. If no documents are held then the only way is a records office as described by Bruce, It is a long and winding road but occasionally people strike lucky but many do not ,
