For the life of me I cannot understand how to remove the exterior door handles from my 1948 Devon Saloon restoration project. The Service Manual states:

“To remove any of the door locks the door handles must first be removed. These are retained in position by strip springs integral with each handle and the handle can be removed by levering the boss of the handle outwards until the strip springs collapse.”

Not being familiar with the concepts of “levering the boss” and “strip springs collapse”, I can not understand what is being directed to do.

Any translation into 2024 AD language would be GREATLY appreciated.

Also, took out the four bolt holding the bonnet latch but things did not come apart. Rather than get a hammer and chisel and using brute force, I thought I might ask the good folks of this forum.

    Thanks,

    Steve

The situation with door handles takes a ton of patience. I found that it’s best to remove the door upholstery and undo the screw in the end of the square handle boss and pull the handle out. The boot handle is a bit more tricky. First –  take out the four screws that hold the lock mechanism in place from the inside. Second – spray the entire lock insides with penetrating oil and leave it for a day or so.  Third- apply pressure from all sides to loosen the handle. You may have to loose-install the screws to get enough purchase. Don’t forget the handle’s been in place for well over 60 years and likely seized with rust.  That’s the way I did my Devon.
