Just for the benefit of all members, DVLA will no longer accept old tax discs as there has to be a direct link between the chassis number and the reg number and tax discs dont record chassis numbers. Simply applying for a new V5c on the old number wont work either because the chassis number is already linked to a reg number. Im afraid DVLA have now closed any loopholes and everything has to go down the right route.  If no documents are held then the only way is a records office as described by Bruce, It is a long and winding road but occasionally people strike lucky but many do not ,
